Online course on Berry Street Education Model


Berry Street educators will deliver a course online training in the BSEM model. The training will be divided into 3 parts to support your learning and to combat Zoom fatigue. We have always strived to model best practice teaching pedagogy while delivering and this will still be the case, just online! Each session will be delivered live and we will not be recording any session. Having consulted with a number of schools we have landed upon a model to deliver BSEM, one that ensures you will still learn the practical experiences that you can use in your classroom – whether you are working in-person or remote.

BSEM will be delivered online on the following dates:

Module 1, Body is delivered on the 12,13, 14 January at 8am (BST) in 90 minute sessions on each day

Module 2, Relationship is delivered on the 9, 10, 11 February at 8am (BST) in 90 minute sessions on each day

Module 3, & 4, Stamina and Engagement is delivered on the 16, 17, 18 March at 8am (BST) in 90 minute sessions on each day

Module 5, Character is delivered on the 23, 24, 25 March at ­8am (BST) in 90 min sessions on each day

About Berry Street School

Berry Street School is located in Australia and is probably best known for their BSEM (Berry Street Education Model) program. The school works with emotionally injured children, who come from broken homes. Many of their students are in care.

Teachers and educators experience this on a daily basis in their learning environment; young people who experience that stress, emotional confusion such as anxiety and depression, lack of family support or a specific traumatic event make their everyday life difficult and sometimes unaffordable.

Understanding the meaning of trauma and emotional well-being and the needs for healing and emotional growth for achievement requires specialized strategies and training. The Berry Street Education Model is a research-based model that provides educators and schools with practical educational strategies to engage students who have proven particularly well-suited to young people with learning disabilities. The model has proved particularly suitable for resource-poor and non-learning-ready students.

This model is composed of evidence-based positive education (Positive Education & Training), best practice from trauma awareness and mental health. The model supports educational staff and leadership in developing practices and strategies that reinforce cognitive and behavioral change. This change ensures that young people are able to maintain commitment to their learning and relationships, leading to classrooms that are calmer and happier, which in turn leads to improved academic performance.

Over 27,000 educators in more than 3,000 schools have participated in the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM). The course is an engaging and interactive experience provided by well-qualified facilitators.

A research project at the University of Melbourne documented that the BSEM strategies and practices contribute to more than two years of academic growth in one year (* Stokes, H., & Turnbull, M., 2016).
